Benefits
| GIFTS
will collect information on temperature, wind patterns, water vapor,
and atmospheric pollutants for scientists to use in several important
ways: |
|

|
- GIFTS allows weather
forecasters to get nearly up-to-the-minute information on weather
conditions such as developing hurricanes or tornados.
- GIFTS' data will
alert people in affected areas to prepare for storms and seek
safety.
- When there is a
large forest fire or volcanic eruption, GIFTS will measure the
pollutants in the air and the wind direction for scientists to
advise people on their air quality.
- Scientists will
use GIFTS to collect data over long periods of time to create
computer models of wind, rain and temperature to forecast and
improve airplane and boat routes, to help farmers plan planting
and harvesting, and to help energy planners determine amounts
of electricity and gas.
